Whitfield Evening WI
June was our Birthday meeting and what a meeting it was. The planned speaker was unable to attend, so at short notice, our programme secretary was able to book bee-keeper Mark Woollard who gave an informative and amusing talk on, not just a hobby, but his livelihood. On 25th June we ran the refreshments station in the pavilion for the Village Fayre, providing an array of home made cakes and sandwiches. This went well although, sadly, the weather wasn’t very good.
Our Brighton trip on 12th July went well and the weather wasn’t TOO bad. The Wit and Wisdom on 15th July was well attended and our Question Master, Ian provided us with an enjoyable and challenging evening. Our July meeting was on a VERY hot evening but was still well attended. Our speaker was Jim Davies who talked to us about the Kent Mines. Skilled miners came from all over the country but sadly suffered from a lot of discrimination in the local area. This led to the building of the villages and a a community spirit being built up within them.
On 10th August we held our Summer Tea. Over 80 members and friends attended and were treated to a variety of home made cakes, scones and jam and strawberries and cream. Entertainment was provided by the Tip Top Tappers: a group of members who have been learning Tap Dancing, from Alison, since March. They were given generous applause and even had to perform an encore!
We are now looking forward to our popular 60s Evening, this year with Barry Goss on Friday 14th October. It is an American Supper and tickets are available from Sue on 820415.
